Sherwood Forest Gadwall Jacket REVIEW

It was only recently that I happened upon the Sherwood Forest clothing company but I am extremely pleased I did. The company have been running since the early 1970's from their Head Office in Nottingham and provide quality outdoor and country clothing.

I recently took ownership of a matching jacket and pair of trousers from Sherwood's Gadwall range. The men's Gadwall jacket has been a staple for Sherwood Forest for many years, and continues to be a favourite amongst the consumer market. The Jacket is available in a moss olive colour and has some fantastic features that really took me by surprise for a jacket in this price range. I have seen jackets costing two or three times the price of the Gadwall but with half of the features.

I am very particular about my jackets, I like a traditional feel mixed with a practical and slightly tactical look. A good jacket for me needs to blend durability, comfort, tradition, style and innovation. I love lots of pockets but most importantly I want a shooting jacket that looks like a shooting jacket. I loved the Gadwall straight out of the box before even trying it on. The Gadwall has some great features, including it's waterproof and breathable membrane, silent fabric and optional safety band (something I personally have not seen on other jackets).

For extra comfort and practicality the Gadwall jacket has a large detachable poachers pocket, upper hand warmer pockets and cartridge pockets. Another feature that I really like is the knitted inner storm cuff. This helps prevent rain running down your arms when shooting and also keeps the sleeves in place when moving around, not to mention stopping a cold breeze! I also think it just gives a very snug, warm feeling when out and about in the field.

I wore this jacket with only a T-shirt underneath on a very cold, wet and windy day in October and I was surprised just how warm this jacket is whilst remaining lightweight and breathable.

The jacket has a very good finish to it and would be perfect out in the hide and would fit equally well on even the nicest game days. After wearing this jacket I can tell you it keeps the warmth in and the cold out whilst remaining lightweight. After wearing on a few occasions I have found that this slightly lighter feel is perfect. The Jacket uses ISOFLUX technology. The garment has been constructed using fully breathable fabric which is wholly impervious to water. This ensures you get the protection from the elements whilst the wearer stays warm, it also prevents the wearer over perspiring too much. All in all, it ticks every box here.

The hand warmer pockets have a lovely suede/ micro fibre lining that are really comfortable and are closed securely with zips. I have number of jackets with hand warmer pockets fastened with Velcro and I always like to see manufacturers using zips as I feel they are more reliable, durable and a whole lot less fiddly. It also gives the jacket a more premium feel. Extra points to Sherwood here!

Sherwood have gone to great lengths to tick all the boxes with this jacket. When I first tried it on I spent the first five minutes finding more and more pockets on this thing. Underneath the right arm is another zip which opens a compartment with a safety band in it. This safety band is a fluorescent orange and comes out of its compartment to secure round your arm and the exterior of the jacket. Ideal for hunters needing to increase visibility to others whilst out in the field. There is also the poachers pocket on the inside lining which offers a detachable zip bag as well. Both are small features but give the Gadwall jacket the edge against its competitors. This is a jacket for every eventuality.

The jacket fits very well and is extremely comfortable with its 'active cut' providing great ease of movement. The rear of the jacket has a very flexible cut to allow me to mount my gun with ease without putting strain on the sleeves or pulling on the jacket when I lift my arms. I can already tell that this will be a good go to shooting jacket in the autumn and winter months. It is worth noting that the sizes are very large, where I am a size small or medium In most jackets, I am a size XS in this range and still have more than enough room for 3 or 4 extra layers.

Also available in the range are the men's matching Gadwall trousers which retail for around £50 online. The Gadwall trousers come in the same fabric as the jacket and again are very comfortable. They have a knife & thigh pocket, rear pockets with storm flaps, adjustable straps at ankle and a part elasticated waist for comfort. Again, the trousers have a great feel and will be put to great use out in the field in my pigeon hide.

I can't find any fault in the Gadwall jacket but there a couple of slight changes I would personally prefer to see on the trousers. Firstly is the fact that unlike the jacket that comes in a range of sizes from XS up to 3XL, the trousers offer a size range from 30" to 42" waist but offer no variety in leg length apart from the standard 31". Unfortunately, I am not overly privileged with height so although the 34" trousers fit me well, the legs are quite long, although this may be cured by shoving some wellies on!

To combat the length issues and to help with overall fit, Sherwood have provided adjustable straps at the ankle so you can tighten the ankles to fit. This is a useful feature and it certainly helps although doesn't completely combat the issues with the length. I would prefer to see options for short, regular and long trousers. The only improvement I would make here is that the adjustable straps are Velcro. I feel that over time in the field the Velcro would not be as durable as the buttoned variety found on the Kensington Trouser. Time will tell and you have to bear in mind that the Gadwall trousers are cheaper than the Kensington range. All that being said, they are again a great product and if I were a bit taller I would have absolutely no complaints with the trousers whatsoever.

Overall, the trousers are very comfortable, look good and provide everything you need for a solid pair of outdoor trousers.

Sherwood Forest Country Sports collection has been developed exclusively for outdoor pursuits specifically hunting, shooting and fishing. They cater for both men and women with an extensive range providing quality, style and comfort through functional and affordable clothing. Overall, I could not fault the jacket and would only have slight reservations with the trousers but not enough to put me off buying them again. You have to congratulate Sherwood Forest, they have created a beautiful product in the Gadwall range and one that is for the everyday outdoors enthusiast. For the price, you are getting very high levels of comfort, durability, quality and style. If you could only get one jacket this would be a great recommendation as it will serve you well for all your needs from shooting in the hide, the finest game days, to an evening stroll with the dog. Could you really ask for more?

The Gadwall jacket is available for around £130 online and you can purchase from www.clothingforyou.com (Use discount code Elliot15 to receive 15% off your order!)
